Kelly Lang Childhood / Early Life

Despite having been born in a very loving and close-knit family- Kelly was deprived of her father Velton’s love as he died of cancer when Kelly was just 13 years of age. On 20th April 2015, what would have been her father’s 75th Birthday, Kelly took to Facebook to share this emotional message. She wrote,

Thinking about my dad today on his birthday. Can’t believe he would have been 75. Wow. He sure has missed out on a lot. Go hug your daddies and mamas today if you still have that precious opportunity

By the time Kelly was 6 years old, her career path was already mapped out; or mapped out for her, rather. Kelly started writing songs at that very age and she wanted to be an entertainer. Her parents were very supportive indeed. However, her dad was a little doubtful since women didn’t have it easy. But Kelly says that he was still supportive and gave her advice instead;

“I was blessed that my parents were extremely supportive of me,” Lang recalls. “I think my dad had a few reservations because he knew what road life was like. It was hard for women. But the thing he always stressed to me was to be kind to people. That was a very big thing with him – being kind. I guess he had seen a lot of artists who were not nice to the people they worked with.”

At the age of 15, Kelly already recorded her first Billboard single titled ‘Lady, Lady’. Her first single caught the attention of the then-newly formed CMT network and they immediately reached out to Lang with the proposition of a music video. Subsequently, the song became one of the first videos played on the new network.
