I loved our childhood — summers playing basketball, winters sledding. We weren’t outsiders — I sold Girl Scout cookies, was captain of the tennis team. We were part of the club — or so we thought. And while some folks might not have liked Muslims in the abstract — most people liked our family. Maybe we were the exception to the rule.

Asma Khalid’s Career And Struggles
Asma has had a very active career, having spent well over 15 years in journalism. However, it hasn’t been the most straightforward job for her. Due to her religion, Asma Khalid has faced a lot of hardships in her line of work. Her struggles could even explain why she takes part in a lot of political reporting.
Firstly, let’s look at how her career developed before we look at what she has had to go through. Asma first started her career as an intern in 2003. Asma was a reporting intern as a part of the Hoosier State Press Association Pulliam Internship Program.
Subsequently, she joined the South Asia Bureau in Washington as a desk intern; and then in BBC’s NewsHour again as an intern. After four years, Asma joined WAMU 88.5 radio as a news reporter.
Finally, in 2007, Asma joined NPR, where she would continue working till present. Currently, Asma works as a correspondent for NPR after a couple of years of different positions in NPR and WAMU.
While covering stories of the Trump rallies in 2016, Asma Khalid faced harassment for being Muslim. She stated that it was devastating to know that just her existence and the idea of her being Muslim would cause issues in the 2016 election. She officially said in a broadcast:
Through tears, I told her that if I had known my sheer existence — just the idea of being Muslim — would be a debatable issue in the 2016 election, I would never have signed up to do this job. To friends and family, I looked like a masochist. But I was too invested to quit.
Likewise, Asma continued to receive inadequate responses and toxicity from a lot of people. Since Asma has to go around talking to all kinds of voters in rallies and elections, she didn’t have much of choice either. But, she always stood firm and went through with it all as it was her job.

But, unfortunately, there isn’t an exact number available on Asma’s earnings. But Asma undoubtedly earns a good salary in subjective terms. As NPR employees’ wages are reportedly somewhere around $111k – $153k, Asma supposedly earns salary within that bracket.
