After his undergraduate, from 1976 to 1978 J. Michael Luttig worked at the U.S. Supreme Court in its Office of the Administrative Assistant to the Chief Justice. There he became close friends with chief justice Warren Burger.
After graduating from law school, he was an associate with the White House Counsel, Fred F. Fielding at the Regan administration for a year. He then clerked for Judge Antonin Scalia f the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit for a year.
Luttig held various positions within the United States Department of Justice until 1991 under George H. Bush. In April 1991, President George H. Bush nominated him to fill a newly created seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Luttig was the leading feeder judge in the U.S Court of Appeals, with virtually all of his law clerks have gone on to clerk with conservative justices in the Supreme Court.
Michael Luttig resigned in May 2006, to become the general counsel and senior vice president for The Boeing Company. He later resigned as general counsel to Boeing in 2019 and was replaced by Brett Gerry. Reportedly, Luttig was an adviser to Vice President Mike Pence’s staff in 2021.
