Weir began training as a chef at Annecy, France’s Madeleine Kamman Academy. She went back to California after one year where she spent five years working in the Chez Panisse kitchen.
The talents of Weir were brought to PBS’s attention in the 1990s, who gave him the ‘Weir Cooking in the Wine Country’ sequence, shot at Napa Valley. It was a leading show at the time.
Joanne’s passion for educating people on how to cook is conveyed with a national TV audience in her award-winning television series ‘Joanne Weir’s Cooking Class’ as well as her latest series ‘Joanne Weir Gets Young.’ In February 2018 her show, “Joanne Weir’s Plates and Places,” started airing.
Her first cookbook, ‘From Tapas to Meze’ (Crown), was published in 1994, carried her passion for Mediterranean cuisine. She was awarded a James Beard Award. There were numerous books followed, such as the “You Say Tomato,” “Gypsy Kitchen,” “Cooking Confidence,” etc., nominated by James Beard.
In 2012 just eight years ago, a cookbook about tequila was published. In downtown Sausalito, she joined Larry Mindel, the restaurant’s business partners, to open the Copita. Marin County was introduced to a more advanced Mexican style with the upscale Mexican restaurant.
For several national magazines, she has also written for such as Cooking Bright, Fine Cooking, Fine Cooking, Food & Wine, AARP The Journal, and Sunset Magazine.

Joanne married her husband, an attorney, Joe Ehrlich, on August 29, 2009. Although she doesn’t have any biological children, Joanne is the stepmother of Joe’s three daughters, who are all adults now. The couple went to Greece for their honeymoon.
Her eldest stepdaughter Abigail Ehrlich even got married in 2020. Talking about Abigail’s marriage, Weir tweeted,
I have never heard so many toasts. So heartfelt, so emotional, so joyous. And I was still either crying or smiling or a combination of both.
