Griffin Matthews Husband / Married / Gay
Griffin Matthews, 38, and Matt Gould, 40, are, first and foremost, good writers—Griffin of complex characters caught up in nuanced situations and Matt of infectious melodies set to imaginative harmonies, muscular folk-inflected rhythms, and some of the best vocal arrangings you’ll ever hear.
They are gay writers too, life partners whose work has integrity and honesty about gay characters and relationships without it being the dominant theme of their writing. They write human beings, some of whom happen to be gay.
MATTHEWS: Griffin is not just a gay man with a best friend; he’s a gay man who has and wants to give out love. It’s truer to my experience. It’s really about humanity. When you are getting to know somebody, sexuality becomes so small. Griffin’s sexuality is not the thing that defines him. And the students’ culture or religion is not something that defines them.
MATTHEWS: Matt and I also have very different perspectives of the world. Matt’s Jewish; I’m Christian. I’m black; he’s white. I like sweet melodies; Matt likes pounding, heart-pumping rhythms. You can hear the tension in our professional and personal relationship inside of the music, but I’ve spent enough time with his Jewish New York family to know there is a comedy in tension.
Matthews and Gould push boundaries both outward and inward. It’s clear that these young theatre artists give the promise of adventurous and insightful work we will be enjoying for years to come.
