A year ago, Sasha Palatnikov upped sticks and moved his whole life to Las Vegas to chase his dream of becoming the first fighter to raise the Hong Kong flag in the UFC Octagon. That dream became reality this month when the 31-year-old signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC – and he makes his debut this weekend against American Louis “The Monster” Cosce (7-0) in the first preliminary fight on the UFC 255 pay-per-view.
“It’s not something I expected to happen so quickly, I was kind of anticipating maybe next year,” Palatnikov told SCMP MMA. “But I’m super excited. This is a goal I set over 10 years ago, and to finally accomplish it, it’s amazing.
Palatnikov (5-2) returned to action this year with a first-round TKO at UAE Warriors 13 in September, after joining up with Syndicate MMA and head coach John Wood, and undergoing knee surgery.
He had been set to return to fight for the Dubai-based promotion’s vacant middleweight belt, and defend his title in Korean promotion AFC, but the UFC came calling just 10 days after he signed with the Ruby Sports and Entertainment management company last month.
“Having represented Hong Kong in rugby and basketball at juniors levels, it was never a thing Sasha thought of as a kid that he’ll be fighting in the UFC and representing Hong Kong. But this was all meant to be.

Sasha Palatnikov UFC Debut
Sasha Palatnikov and Louis Cosce kicked off the preliminary card at UFC 255. The bout between the two men took place at welterweight. Both men are currently unranked in the division, and the fight was an excellent opportunity to establish themselves at 170 pounds.
Palatnikov could not have asked for a better debut in the promotion. He was able to stop ‘The Monster’ in the third round of their fight via TKO. It was not all smooth sailing for the debutant as he had to overcome some adversity early on to secure a stoppage in the final round

Palatnikov was born and raised in the city to a Russian father and Scottish mother. Now 31 years of age, Sasha “The White Lotus” Palatnikov has started his UFC career very late. He studied at the University of Buffalo and spent time living in Florida where he trained at the famed former Blackzilians gym.
But Sasha moved back to Hong Kong, where he had been working and training at the Hybrid MMA gym with Brazilian UFC welterweight Alberto Mina (13-1).
Sasha’s parents put him in Karate at the age of five and he had loved fighting ever since. He started playing rugby at the age of six and would train Muay Thai and boxing in the off-seasons. The MMA star was fortunate to have played rugby professionally, but due to an injury, he decided to begin his university studies in Montreal, Canada.
