Indian-origin Dr. Celine Gounder Part of Joe Biden’s Coronavirus Taskforce
Dr. Celine Gounder an assistant professor in the New York University Grossman School of Medicine, has been named as a member of the coronavirus taskforce of US President-elect Joe Biden.
Acknowledging and thanking the wishes that were sent to her from Tamil Nadu, Celine in a Twitter thread explained why she continues to retain her caste name as her last name.
“My father changed his name to Gounder in the early 1970s before I was born. My name is my name. It’s part of my history and identity, even if some of that history is painful. I didn’t change my name when I got married. I’m not changing it now,” she wrote.
Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami took to Twitter to wish Gounder and Indian-American physician Vivek Murthy who is also a part of the task force.

Dr. Celine Gounder received her BA in Molecular Biology from Princeton University, her Master of Science in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2000. Her master’s thesis was titled Field evaluation of a rapid immunochromatographic test for tuberculosis, and her MD from the University of Washington in 2004. While attending UW School of Medicine, she co-founded the International Health Group, which advocates for doctors in training to develop careers that serve disadvantaged people around the world.
Dr. Gounder was an intern and resident in Internal Medicine at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital. She was also a post-doctoral fellow in Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University. From 1998 and 2012, she educated herself on TB and HIV in South Africa, Lesotho, Malawi, Ethiopia, and Brazil. Dr. Gounder was elected a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in 2016. She was elected a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in 2016 and featured in the IDSA’s 2017 Annual Report. In 2017, People Magazine named her one of 25 Women Changing the World.
