Prior to joining WSJ, Ann worked as a global development writer/editor for the Los Angeles Times for 14 years. So how did Ann end up at WSJ?
Ann answered the same question in one of her interviews, that read,
I tried to get a foot in the door at the Journal three or four times before I was hired. It wasn’t until a former WSJ staffer got my résumé in front of the appropriate person on the company’s recruitment team that I landed an interview and was given the opportunity to properly compete for the job.
Before getting the job there, Simmons had spent more than three decades studying, visiting, and working in Russia.

Talking of Ann’s education, she holds a double honors bachelor’s degree in Russian and Norwegian from the University of East Anglia.
