David Banda Mwale Ciccone Ritchie is the adopted son of the famous American singer Madonna. David Banda is making a name for himself by becoming a promising young soccer player.

David was born in Lipunga, Malawi to Yohane Banda and Marita Banda on the 24th of September 2005. Yohan and Marita were a poor farmer couple who had a hard time making their ends meet.

Guy Ritchie and Madonna Louise Ciccone adopted David Banda from an orphanage while Madonna was visiting there for her program Raising Malawi.

The adoption of David Banda was surrounded by controversies. David’s biological father didn’t want Madonna to adopt his child because of Madonna’s controversial lifestyle and her divorce.
At the time of David’s adoption, Maddona’s divorce was already filed and she was battling for the custody of her biological son with Guy Ritchie.
Yohane (David’s biological father) then appeared in the media and said that he would withdraw the custody as Madonna’s controversial lifestyle might affect David’s future.
Madonna later visited Malawi, along with David, to have a final settlement with Yohane. That was David’s first visit to his birthplace after his adoption.
Hurdles in David Banda adoption process
On the 10th of October 2006 Madonna listed herself to adopt the baby.
There were criticisms from the human rights group who said she was given preferential treatment because of her status.
Some people even tried to stop Madonna’s jet on the Lilongwe Airport runway in Malawi when she wanted to fly out with David.
How was the Law violated during David’s Adoption?
The Malawian law stated that prospective parents of adopted children must live in the country for at least eighteen months before adoption. However, Madonna hadn’t stayed there for 18 months. Some newspapers even accused her of kidnapping the boy from the orphanage.
The case was eventually taken to court and Madonna won, making David officially her son. Madonna modified the boy’s name to David Banda Mwale Ciccone Ritchie. This new name reflected Madonna’s last name, her adopted and biological father’s name (Ritchie), and the name of David’s birthplace.
