The pioneering comic and actor, Paul Mooney, has died at the age of 79, his representative, Cassandra Williams has said.
Paul Mooney died Wednesday at 5:30 a.m. at his home in Oakland, California after suffering a heart attack. A statement from the family is forthcoming, Williams said.
Paul Mooney likely gained his biggest fame in Chappelle’s Show due to a few stunning characters, as well as a few skits that transcended the Comedy Central platform they originally aired on.
Mooney worked as both an actor and a writer in his career, which spanned seven decades.
He was a writer for “The Richard Pryor Show,” “In Living Color,” “Chappelle’s Show,” and more.
As an actor, he’s known for playing Sam Cooke in “The Buddy Holly Story” and Junebug in “Bamboozled.”
Mooney was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and moved to Oakland, California, several years later. He is survived by his children: Dwayne Mooney, Shane Mooney, Daryl Mooney, and Symeon Mooney.
