Sampson was born to the Lumbee Indian community of Deep Branch in Robeson County, North Carolina, on the 5th of October 1955 where he excelled in the classroom and the athletic arena during his prep days at Pembroke High School, Pembroke, in North Carolina. Sampson captained his high school basketball team for two years and played for his father John W. Ned Sampson.
His father was also one of 500 Lumbee Native Americans who made national news by driving out the Ku Klux Klan from Maxton, North Carolina in what is celebrated annually by the Lumbee as the Battle of Hayes Pond. During the summer, he worked in a tobacco factory.
His mother Eva Sampson was a nurse. He grew up with his three sisters, two of them graduated from the University of North Carolina in the health field. One sister today is working as a physical therapist while the other sister is working as a pharmacist. His third sister went for education.

After leaving the state of Michigan, Sampson moved to Montana Tech (of the NAIA ) where he became an assistant coach. Having worked for five years at Montana Tech, Sampson then joined the staff at Washington State University as Len Stevens’s assistant. After two years under Stevens, Sampson was named head coach of the Washington State Cougars in 1988.
Sampson became the 11th head coach of the University of Oklahoma on April 25, 1994. Sampson was named National Coach of the Year in 1995 (his first year at the OU) by the Associated Press. , United States Basketball Writers Association and Basketball Weekly.
On March 29, 2006, Sampson was appointed head coach of Indiana University following the resignation of Mike Davis. Following his resignation and penalties from the NCAA, he spent the next three years as an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks, followed by three years as an assistant for the Houston Rockets. Sampson was instrumental in the controversial recruiting of star player Eric Gordon, who signed with Indiana after reneging on an early verbal commitment to the University of Illinois.
On March 8, 2008, Sampson was hired in an advisory role by the San Antonio Spurs. On May 14, 2008, Sampson was hired as an assistant coach for the Bucks under Scott Skiles. Until 2014, he had been an assistant coach of the Houston Rockets.
