Shawn commenced his career as a Financial Advisor for Morgan Stanley for 6 years from 1999 to 2005. At the end of 2004, he even worked as a Back Judge on the side for Western Athletic Commission. After this, he worked as a Back Judge in the Big 12 conference league and finally was promoted to a referee in 2011 for the Pac-12 conference.
Hochuli played soccer at the Pitzer College. In 2014, he worked as a side judge for his first NFL season. He also has worked as a representative at the Pac-12, the Arena Football League. He was head of ArenaBowl XXIV referee between the Sharks of Jacksonville and Rattlers of Arizona on 13 August 2011. For a pre-season 2017 match, he also worked as head referee.
