Katherine commenced her career as an Associate on Powell Goldstein & Murphy LLP from 2001 to 2002. She then moved to another company named Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP, where she again worked as an Associate. From 2003- 2004 she worked as a Law Clerk for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Before her USTR career, Tai worked at a handful of law firms including Baker & McKenzie and Miller & Chevalier. Katherine worked as Chief Counsel for China Trade Compliance at the U.S. Office. Trade Representative (USTR) where she was responsible for overseeing the production and litigation of U.S. disputes against China in the WTO. Katherine served as Associate General Counsel at the USTR and the U.S. from 2007 to 2011.
During Tai’s time with the Ways and Means Committee, she played a major role in the House’s agreements with the Trump administration on the US–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) calling for stronger labor legislation.
She played an important part in the House negotiations with the Trump Administration on the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) during her tenure as a member of the Committee for Ways and Means and supported improving working conditions.
