Rebecca Friedrichs Career
Rebecca started her first day as a public teacher in 1988. Since then, she actively expressed concerns about the policies and politics of the teacher’s union. Teachers are forced to financially support the Teacher’s Union, and Rebecca did not accept this. However, Friedrichs ignored politics in the first decade of her career. After a full decade, Rebecca eventually joined the Teacher’s Union to create better scenarios for teachers.
Rebecca would go on to serve her local union board for three years. Here, she tried to bring on a positive change in the policies, starting from her district. Rebecca hoped to decrease the expenditures of members in the Union.
Initially, she had a lot of support from her coworkers in the Union, but to no surprise, the change did not come that easily. Rebecca soon realized that the representatives in the Union were afraid to speak up to their seniors since they had no say in what policies would be passed by the Union.
She is now taking some time away from the classroom to support educational policies that are friendly to children as well as teachers. Her movement, For Kids And Country, is focused on helping teachers, parents, students, faith leaders, and citizens uniting to restore American school’s policies and culture.
Rebecca Friedrichs’ Lawsuit And Published Book
Rebecca Friedrichs was involved in a labor law case in 2016 that was held in the Supreme Court of the United States. The lawsuit looked at the issue of arrangements under the First
Amendment of the United States. Rebecca’s lawsuit titled “Friedrichs v California Teachers’ Association” sought to free educators and all public sector employees from forced unionism.
The lawsuit came to an end ruling 5-4 in Rebecca’s favor. This case also laid foundations for the “Janus v AFSCME” lawsuit, which ended public-sector forced unionism in all of America. However, Rebecca didn’t end her efforts here. She eventually wrote a book titled “Standing Up To Goliath”.
Rebecca’s book, “Standing Up To Goliath: Battling State and National Teachers’ Unions for the Heart and Soul of Our Kids and Country”, Rebecca talks about her 30-year struggle as an elementary school teacher who comes face-to-face with the forces diving and corrupting American school systems — the state and national teachers’ union. Her story reveals and features testimonies from teachers, parents, and kids. Moreover, Rebecca’s book also displays the Teachers’ Union’s impact on political and social aspects.
