Hilda Lucia Solis: Everything About The LA County’s Supervisor

Born on the 20th of October, 1957, Hilda L. Solis, is the first Latina to serve the United States Cabinet.  Hilda was born in the City of La Puente, California to her parents, who immigrated from Mexico and Nicaragua. Hilda Solis Family And Childhood

Hilda is the third child of her parents Raul Solis, and Juana Sequeira. She has four sisters and two brothers, whom she mentions when she talks about the hardships of having to live with a low wage income. 

Her father, Raul, worked at a Quemetco battery recycling plant after his arrival in the US. Soon after, he met Hilda’s mother, Juana, and they got married as they had the same dream of giving an opportunistic life to their children. 

Hilda Solis Education and College Life

Solis graduated from La Puente High School, where she didn’t quite have the ideal time growing up. Hilda has said that she had quite a difficult time growing up; having to mature quickly. 

After school, Hilda took on a lot of government grants and part-time jobs to ensure that she got through College. However, she did graduate from the California State Polytechnic University at Ponoma. 

Solis was the first in her family to graduate from college, receiving her B.A. in political science from California State Polytechnic University in 1979.

Later, Hilda went on to earn herself a Master of Public Administration Degree at the University of South California.

Before Hilda Became County Supervisor

As a part of her internship, Hilda started her first venture into American Politics as a newsletter editor-in-chief in the White House Office of Hispanic Affairs back in 1980. She soon left as she disagreed with some policies in the Office, then met her future husband, Sam H. Sayyad.

Afterward, Hilda worked with a few schools as the Director of the California Student Opportunity and Access Program in 1982. In 1985, Hilda joined a few more organizations and got elected into the Board of Trustees at Rio Hondo College District. 

In 1990, Hilda Solis finally got her chance to fight for the low-wage and underprivileged people as she got into the California State Assembly. In the state senate, Hilda authored 17 bills to fight against domestic violence as well as other issues such as championed labor, education, and healthcare.

After a handful of years, Hilda had to leave the senate as she couldn’t get reelected more. That pushed her to the US House of Representatives. Hilda took on the title of a freshman whip upon joining the House of Representatives, her responsibility being that she had to ensure that the party’s members vote for the party rather than being led by their ideologies. 

The highlight of her career was when she got to work as the Secretary of Labor under former President Barack Obama. She was a supporter of Hilary Clinton. However, former President Obama recognized her talents and effort. Hence, former President Obama made efforts to ensure that Hilda worked under his administration.

How Did Hilda Met Her Husband?

Hilda met Sam H. Sayyad soon after she left the White House Office. Her husband owns his own automotive business, a repair center in Irwindale, California. The couple had an issue with their tax returns when she worked under Obama’s administration. But, this eventually got resolved, and Hilda didn’t have to undergo a thorough investigation as it was an honest mistake from Sayyad.

Sadly, the couple doesn’t have any children of their own yet. However, while she doesn’t have any children to call her own, Hilda spends a decent amount of time with underprivileged children, cheering them up and making sure that their families/foster homes get a better life.

What Does Hilda Solis Fight For Now?

At the start of 2013, Hilda resigned as the Labor Secretary and decided to run for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

Hilda officially stated that she had too much of the Washington life and wanted to spend her time reconnecting with her local community and her mother, who was 87 years of age at the time. Firstly, she wanted some rest. So she took a year off from politics and spent the time doing minor scholarly work.

Finally, in 2014 Hilda won a seat in the County Board of Supervisors. She helped facilitate a lot of neighborhoods in the state, causing an increase in the budget, assisting foster homes, and much more.

Now, in 2020, Hilda is an open supporter of the Joe Biden presidential campaign. Hilda has officially made a statement saying that she believes Biden to have a steady approach. Also, a lot of experience, making him the most suitable candidate.

According to California’s public pay database, Solis earned about $300,000 in her time as Supervisor. However, it is to be noted that this record is from 2017. 

She invested in a handful of businesses. An official record from 2012 shows that she had investments in her husband’s Automotive company. The rest of her net worth comes from her savings accounts. Unfortunately, there aren’t any more latest official postings of her salaries, properties, or investments. Therefore, her net worth is estimated to be around $2 million as of 2020.
