Cometan, honoured under the title Cometan the Contemplator, is a British philosopher who is most famous for founding the branch of philosophy called cosmontology and as the founder and leader of the Astronist religion. Astronism is an organized philosophy and astronomical religion belonging to the Astronic tradition whose origins can be traced back to the Stone Age. Delineating the history of this tradition of religion became a major part of Cometan’s rise to fame and signaled his major contribution to the study of religion.
Cometan founded the world’s youngest religion called Astronism from the age of 15 when he began to receive inspirations about the future of humanity in space and the importance of religious fervor to the success of space exploration. Cometan sought to re-establish philosophy as a central pillar of society as well as to lead a revival of astronomical religions to inspire the masses for space exploration. Astronism is a naturalistic non-theistic faith which is why it is rapidly growing in many atheistic countries like China, Vietnam and Japan and also in the West where traditional religions are on the decline.
Cometan advocates a worldview that is based on placing space at the centre of a person’s beliefs and lifestyle which is known as cosmocentrism. Astronism is the world’s youngest and 14th largest religion as of November 2019. Cometan is also known as a surographer which is a person deemed to possess a miraculous ability to prolifically write, especially under extraordinary circumstances. He achieved this title through his sole authorship of the founding book of Astronism which is called the Omnidoxy and which he wrote over the course of five years and was over 2 million words in total length upon its completion.
For his efforts, Cometan has become the world’s youngest global religious leader and philosopher and is working to stop the persecution of religions of both Astronists and non-Astronists alike. Other interests of his are the commercialization of religion, the future of religion, religious beliefs in space and certainly the exploration of questions regarding space philosophy, such as whether space exploration is ethical and how humanity should approach the exploration of The Cosmos. Cometan’s Birth & Childhood
Cometan was born Brandon Reece Taylor to his mother, Louise J. Counsell and to his father, Sean Frederick Taylor, on 1st July 1998 at the old Sharoe Green Unit of Royal Preston Hospital in Lancashire, England. He grew up in and around the city of Preston alongside his older sister, Lucia Natalie, and his many cousins, most prominent of whom were Martin and Thomas Taylor. Much of Cometan’s weekends were spent with his paternal grandmother at 222 Longmeanygate, a detached residence with extensive grounds and fields were Cometan played in the summer months. Cometan’s grandmother, Irene Mary Taylor, was a deeply devout Roman Catholic whose entire house was a shrine and statement to her faith. This deep religiosity would have a significant impact on Cometan’s development and from his adolescence onwards, would act as the main trajectory of his life.
Cometan spent so much time at 222 Longmeanygate with his grandparents and cousins because his mother and father separated when he was four years old. He continued to live with his mother and his older sister at 10 Maple Drive in Bamber Bridge, but at the weekends, his father took him. However, due to Cometan’s father’s own lack of a strong father figure in his life, he didn’t know what to do with Cometan, he did know how to create a bond with him. So, naturally, Cometan’s father began sending him to his grandmother’s at Longmeanygate. This developed into a kind of tradition and structured Cometan’s entire weekend. He got to the point where he would rather spend time with his grandmother and cousins at Longmeanygate than spend time with his father.
Cometan’s grandmother took him and his cousin, Thomas, on my trips out to surrounding towns and cities from Blackpool to Wigan to Manchester to Southport. Cometan held many memories of that time as it was integral to his development. Cometan’s grandmother also to him and his cousin to various churches across Lancashire and Catholic religious institutions from Greygarth Hall to the Convent of the Good Shepherd, both of which are in Manchester. Visiting these religious institutions gave Cometan a deeply spiritual upbringing although he never really showed a deep interest in religion and spirituality until he was fifteen years old.
The other aspect of Cometan’s childhood was the life he had with his sister, Lucia Natalie and his mother, Louise J. Counsell following the separation of his mother and father when Cometan was four years of age. Cometan also became very close with his maternal grandparents, Bill and Hilda Warbrick, who cared for Cometan like their own son throughout his childhood, his adolescent years, and even during his early adulthood, supporting his work to do his Masters’ Dissertation and P.h.D. From 2007 onwards, his mother and his father had both re-coupled and began having their own children which signaled a new phase for Cometan’s childhood, one that welcomed six new people into his life, all of whom would have incredible impacts on how he acted as an older brother.

What Is Astronism?
Astronism is a cosmocentric philosophy or religion that Cometan founded through his authorship of the Omnidoxy and through his related efforts of religious scholarship, advocacy, and his public life as the figurehead of the religion to disseminate its beliefs and ideas globally. Astronism is a religion that is a product of its time. In early 21st century England, religiosity was rapidly decreasing while rates of atheism and non-theism were on the rise.
Founding Astronism during this time meant that Cometan had to consider the direction in which public opinion was swaying. Cometan knew that even those who had renounced all religions continued to crave some source of existential purpose and meaning to their lives.
And so, Astronism became a naturalistic system described as a balanced combination of both religion and philosophy. Fundamentally, Astronism emphasized a person’s spiritual relationship with the stars and called for a revival of the prehistoric astronomical religions that are claimed to be descended from. It is for this lack of emphasis on the existence of God that Astronism is seeing rapid growth amongst the atheist and agnostic communities of the world.
