In her early childhood, she was interested in adventures like rock climbing, boating, surfing, photography and many more. She used to explore new areas that influenced her to pursue her childhood dream to be an astronaut. She is the oldest among her three siblings. The Michigan native completed her graduation from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics located in Durham in the year 1997 and later on joined North Carolina State University where she completed her degree in two major subjects, Bachelors in Electrical Engineering and Bachelors in Physics.

She also served under the position of the Research Associate U.S Antarctic program for three years starting from 2004 till 2007. Besides that, she has also contributed to various research findings.
It was only in the year 2013 that she was selected as an astronaut in NASA and her dream came true. She then completed her training in 2015 which made her eligible for the upcoming missions in the near future.
Recently she is the one to set the record for the longest time spent in space by a woman. She is also the recipient of multiple awards and honors for her work and contribution. The awards she has received include NASA group achievement award, John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory where she was nominated as the invention of the year in 2009.
