Ruth Madeley Professional Career

Ruth Madeley never went to drama school and does not have any professional training.  However, she always knew she wanted to be in the movie industry but she thought she would be a screenwriter as she did her degree in that.

After completing her studies, she did some work with charity Whizz-Kidz and then a producer she knew in London said the BBC were looking for a wheelchair user for a CBBC drama.

“I’m really nosey so decided to see what it was all about. Amazingly I got the part and started from there. I never thought it would turn into a full career but then I got the audition for BBC Three drama Don’t Take My Baby that changed everything. That was my first lead and went on to be recognised by BAFTA. And the rest is history!” she says in her interview.

Ruth Madeley Spina Bifida

Ruth Madeley was diagnosed with spina bifida six weeks before she was born.

The doctors initially told her mother that they didn’t know whether she would even survive.

Spina bifida occurs when a baby’s spine and spinal cord don’t develop properly in the womb, causing a gap in the spine.

It’s a type of neural defect that affects the structure that eventually develops into the baby’s brain and spinal cord.

Ruth Madeley as Rosie in Years and Years

“Rosie is the youngest of the Lyons siblings, she’s a little bit reckless and wild, which I love playing. She’s free spirited but independent at the same time. She’s a daughter, granddaughter, sibling and mother as well, so it’s been fun to play all of those different roles within one character. She’s got a lot of layers to her, she was an incredible character to play.” She tells in her Interview.

Years and Years is a British television drama series which began broadcasting on BBC One in the United Kingdom on 14 May 2019 and will premiere on HBO in the United States on 24 June 2019. The series was created and written by Russell T Davies, and stars Emma Thompson as Vivienne Rook, an outspoken celebrity business woman turned political figure whose controversial opinions divide the nation, alongside Rory Kinnear, T’Nia Miller, Russell Tovey, Jessica Hynes, Ruth Madeley and Anne Reid as the Lyons family.

The focus of the six-part series is the Manchester-based Lyons family: Daniel is getting married to Ralph, Stephen and Celeste worry about their kids, Rosie is chasing a new partner, and Edith has not been home for years. Presiding over them all is Gran, the imperious Muriel. All their lives converge on one crucial night in 2019, and the story accelerates into the future, following the lives and loves of the Lyons over the next 15 years.
